  22. Get SYSCHK from my Page and make sure that the serial port is functional.

  24. Verify that the phone line & cable are working.  DON'T JUST ASSUME this!  
  25. Make sure you've got the rj-11 plug in the proper slot (LINE) on the modem.

  27. Go into your com software & make sure that all settings are correct.  If 
  28. you hear your modem pick up the line, get dial tone, and then dial - then 
  29. you're 99% there!
  30.  
  31. You might need to upgrade the serial port to a 16550A UART or equivalent 
  32. to get proper performance if the modem is faster then 9600
